Where the belief comes from, and why it is so convincing
The widespread belief that basketball increases height often stems from observation. Taller children are frequently selected for teams, encouraged to play more, and given greater court time, leading to their continued participation. Shorter children, by contrast, may find less encouragement and eventually leave the sport. The tall players seen on professional rosters are a result of this selection process, not the cause of their height.

A comprehensive review by Malina (1994) in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise concluded that regular physical activity, sport participation, and training for sport have no measurable effect on attained stature, the timing of peak height velocity, or the rate of growth in stature [1]. A careful reading of the study reveals it was not a training intervention; it lacked a control group, and merely consisted of two measurement surveys conducted ten weeks apart on boys who already had an average of 5.7 years of basketball experience. While the boys grew an average of 1.15 cm during this period, this was consistent with normal growth for their age and did not correlate significantly with changes in any of the five motor tests performed. Grip strength, contrary to popular claims, did not significantly change [5]. It is important, when considering significant decisions about your child's activities, to examine the primary research rather than relying on secondary interpretations.
What the pages telling you otherwise are selling
When you search for information on this topic in India, you will often encounter a pattern. Many pages claim that basketball or specific exercises activate growth plates and stimulate growth hormone. These claims frequently appear alongside advertisements or direct sales of products like height growth protein powders, bone growth gummies, acupressure sole patches, or DNA tests that promise to unlock height potential. Some of these sources may cite reviews without authors, years, or accessible links. It is important to recognise the inherent financial incentive behind such claims.
The calculation to do instead, which takes five minutes and costs nothing
Instead of seeking external levers for height, a more grounded approach involves understanding your child's probable genetic potential. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) growth monitoring guidelines provide a simple and free method to estimate a child's target height range based on parental heights [6].

Measure parental heights: Measure both parents' heights accurately in centimetres.

- For a boy: (Father's height + Mother's height + 13) / 2
- For a girl: (Father's height + Mother's height - 13) / 2

Determine target range: Your child's expected adult height will generally fall within 8 cm above or 8 cm below this calculated mid-parental height.
Worked Example:
If a father is 170 cm and a mother is 160 cm, for a boy:
Mid-parental height = (170 cm + 160 cm + 13) / 2 = 343 / 2 = 171.5 cm
Target height range = 171.5 cm ± 8 cm. So, the boy's expected adult height would likely be between 163.5 cm and 179.5 cm.
It is important to remember three things about this calculation. First, it provides a range, not a precise prediction. The 8 cm band on either side is wide by design to account for natural variations. Second, what matters more than any single number is whether your child consistently tracks along their own percentile line on a growth chart over time. This consistent tracking is the primary purpose of growth monitoring. If your child crosses percentile lines downwards or consistently falls well outside this target range, it indicates a clinical question that should be discussed with a paediatrician, not a decision for sports class selection.

Growth plate injuries account for anywhere between 15 and 30 percent of all childhood fractures, depending on the specific source [9]. A poorly managed or severe growth plate injury is one of the few physical issues that can genuinely reduce the final length of a limb. Growth plates generally fuse, or close, around a bone age of 14 in girls and 16 in boys, with all plates typically closed by about 20 years of age.

So what should a 6 year old actually get out of basketball
Rather than focusing on unattainable promises, let us consider what tangible progress a child can realistically achieve and what a good programme should measure.
