When choosing an activity class for your child, the term 'small batches' is often used, but its true meaning for your child's experience can be unclear. This guide offers a practical way to assess what batch size actually means for your child's active participation and learning opportunities.
Every place in Jaipur says small batches
Many centres in Jaipur promote 'small batches,' yet what constitutes 'small' is rarely defined. This lack of clarity often renders the term a marketing slogan rather than a meaningful differentiator.
Here is a way to make it mean something again. It takes about a minute and you can do it standing in the viewing area.
The number that matters is not the ratio. It is the turns.
In a traditional school classroom, class size primarily influences the amount of individual attention a teacher can provide. This is why most academic research on class size focuses on teacher-student interaction.
An activity class, however, often operates on a different principle. There is typically one key piece of equipment: one beam, one basket, one board, one lane. In such settings, the primary limitation is not always the coach's attention, but rather the availability of the apparatus and the resulting queue for its use.
So, to understand the actual benefit to your child, consider this arithmetic:
- Take the total session length. For example, 45 minutes.
- Subtract the time spent on non-practice activities. This includes arrival, preparing, warm-up, water breaks, and closing routines. A conservative estimate might be 15 minutes.
- This leaves approximately 30 minutes of effective practice time.
- Now, divide this practice time by the number of children sharing the same piece of apparatus or requiring individual turns.
For instance, with eight children, each child would receive roughly 3 minutes and 45 seconds of hands-on time. With twenty children, this reduces to approximately 90 seconds. Over a term of 24 sessions, this difference accumulates significantly: about 18 hours of practice time for the smaller group versus 7 hours for the larger one.
This is not a theoretical claim. It is a straightforward division problem. We encourage you to apply this calculation using the actual numbers observed at any facility you are considering.

It is important to approach claims about ideal class sizes with careful consideration, as this area is often subject to overgeneralisation in marketing.
What is reasonably established
One of the most frequently cited studies is the Tennessee STAR experiment, conducted from 1985 to 1989 [1]. This research randomly assigned children from kindergarten through grade 3 to either small classes (13 to 17 students) or regular-sized classes (22 to 25 students). The findings indicated that children in smaller classes consistently outperformed their counterparts in regular classes on standardised and curriculum-based tests, across diverse urban, suburban, and rural settings. These children also had lower rates of being held back a grade, and struggling learners were identified earlier.
What is disputed
Despite its prominence, the STAR experiment has faced scrutiny. Reviews have highlighted legitimate concerns regarding its design and implementation, suggesting that the commonly reported effect sizes might be overestimated [2]. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of the broader evidence by The Conversation in 2019 concluded that it is not possible to definitively state an ideal class size within the range of 15 to 40 students [3].
What is a standard, not a finding
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a prominent US early-childhood organisation, recommends a maximum group size of 20 for 4 and 5-year-olds, with a ratio of one adult to ten children [4]. It is crucial to understand that this is a professional standard for preschool classrooms, aimed at ensuring adequate supervision and educational support. This recommendation is based on a classroom environment and does not directly translate as evidence for the optimal size of a gymnastics batch or other activity-based classes where equipment use is a primary factor. It is not appropriate to apply such a standard to contexts for which it was not designed.
What is measured and closest to the point
Research specific to physical education lessons offers insights more relevant to activity classes. A common goal in PE is for children to spend at least 50 percent of the lesson engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. However, observed data from various studies indicate that actual engagement levels typically range between 9.5 percent and 42.4 percent [5]. Even in well-managed lessons, this target is often unmet. The implication is clear: every additional child in a group, particularly when sharing limited equipment, tends to reduce the individual child's active participation time. This directly impacts their opportunity for practice and skill development.
Therefore, an honest summary is this: no single research study can provide a universally correct batch size for all activity classes. However, any parent can, with direct observation, determine how many opportunities their child receives to practice within a session.
The India context
In India, the Right to Education Act, 2009, established a pupil-teacher ratio of 30:1 for primary school [6]. The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) maintains a target of keeping this ratio under 30:1, with an even lower target of 25:1 in areas with a significant population of socio-economically disadvantaged students [7].
These ratios represent a foundational standard for academic classrooms, where the primary mode of instruction is often chalk-and-talk. They were not developed or intended to be applied as a standard for environments like activity classes, where children are taking turns on specialised equipment. It is important to note that, to date, no specific Indian standard exists for batch sizes in children's activity classes that account for equipment-sharing and active practice time.
Four things to count in the viewing area
When you are observing an activity class, here are four concrete elements you can count to gain a clearer understanding of your child's potential experience:
- Children in the batch: Count them directly. Do not rely solely on advertised numbers, as these can sometimes be averages or maximums.
- Adults on the floor: Count the instructors actively engaged with the children. Exclude any administrative staff or observers not directly supervising or coaching.
- Minutes of actual practice: Estimate the time within the session where children are actively engaged in the core activity, excluding transitions, water breaks, or instruction time.
- Your own child's turns: Specifically observe and count how many individual opportunities your child gets to use the equipment or perform the skill. This is the most direct measure of their engagement.
Number four is often overlooked, yet it is the most pertinent metric for assessing the value your individual child receives, rather than the experience of an average child in the group.

Attempting to assess 20 children against such a specific checklist within a 45-minute session, while simultaneously providing effective instruction, would be impractical. Beyond a batch size of 10, the time spent waiting in queue begins to significantly reduce active practice. Thus, our batch size and our milestone tracking system are intrinsically linked, representing a single, cohesive educational choice.
